While it is true that achieving absolute accessibility in a city remains a difficult goal, we will highlight the most notable strengths in this regard for one of the world’s most frequented cities.

In terms of accessibility for visually impaired people, there are podo-tactile floors in crosswalks.
Miami’s urban landscape has been crafted with an emphasis on vehicular transportation, rather than pedestrian exploration. Generally speaking, most taxis are not adequately adapted to suit the needs of wheelchair users. In any case, the best option is to hire an adapted van to move comfortably around the city. Exclusive parking spots for people with PCD can be found in every block.
Another suitable alternative is the Miami Beach Trolley, a free service that offers short itineraries around the city. Some trolleys are adapted to accommodate the needs of individuals with mobility challenges. Service dogs are also welcome on board the trolley, provided they are appropriately leashed or harnessed and accompanied by their handlers at all times.

As regards beaches, Miami Beach is thoroughly committed to enhancing its accessibility. Nowadays there are several access points in which, by means of a carpet or mat, crossing the dunes to get to the beach becomes a much easier task. Nevertheless, it must be noted that these adapted walkways do not reach the sea or lifeguard post; they come to an end after the dunes are crossed. Thus, there remains a challenge when it comes to reaching the shore. The sand, once again, presents a barrier for individuals with mobility challenges.
These days, there are two specific places that can turn out to be friendly: South Point Park and 1001 Ocean Drive. We had the opportunity to visit the latter, 1001 Ocean Drive. This place is equipped with adapted manual water wheelchairs, as well as an electric water wheelchair, (however, effective functioning should be checked beforehand, since it might not be available due to maintenance work). They are free of charge provided a wheelchair or a valid driver’s license is left in exchange as a form of guarantee.
Service hours: November to January from 9 am to 4.30 pm – February to October from 9 am to 6 pm
Being an exquisitely touristic city, Miami offers a wide range of Hotels. One of the ones we visited is the Blue Moon Hotel. It meets the standards in terms of accessibility needs quite fairly. The handicap room, which is comfortable and spacious, is conveniently situated on the same level as Services. The pool and breakfast area are entirely accessible. Not only does the pool provide easy access for individuals with disabilities but it also boasts an inbuilt mechanism that allows for effortless entry.
Therefore, even though accessibility is not absolute, Miami can be considered quite friendly to this matter. This makes the stay much more inviting and welcoming for individuals with disabilities.
